hello all,

i had all my mail on my work server and imported it all to my laptop at
home, i'm at work today and all my inbox is on my laptop. i forgot to
check the "leave a copy on the server" thingy....

is there anyway of getting it all back to my desktop at work?

please let me know....

Hi,

select all the messages you'd like to export from your laptop and drag them
to a folder in the Finder; you'll get individual .eml files which you can
then transfer to your desktop Mac (via a USB flash drive, for example). Now
do the reverse, i.e. select all the files inside that folder, and drag them
into Entourage. If anything's unclear, or not working the way it should,
post back.

Hello Michel,

thanks, i think it'll work. one question though. because i have a lot
of images in those emails i can only save a bout 260 in a new folder in
the finder. so i was wondering if you think it'll work if i used my
laptop as an external drive connecting it to my desktop with a
firewire????

thanks again,
devrim.

Hi again,

what you're saying about the Finder folder is quite puzzling; you can only
store 260 files in one folder? As far as I know, there is no size limitation
to a Finder folder; or are you referring to a folder on your USB flash
drive? A flash drive has only limited space available (as opposed to modern
hard drives), which would explain things.

As far as using your laptop as an external drive is concerned: this is
somehow related to what I've just asked you. If you can get all your emails
in one Finder folder on your laptop's hard disc, then yes, you can simply
drag that folder from your laptop (in FireWire mode) to your desktop.
Entourage stores all its items, including emails, in one monolithic
database; unless you want to override your desktop's database in its
entirety, you cannot simply copy your laptop's Entourage database, but you
will instead have to export your emails somehow. There are other methods,
mind you, so if you want to try something else, post back again, and this
time, state what version of Entourage (v.X or 2004) you're using, since
Entourage 2004 has a new Export method you might want to use.

Ther ehave been issues in the past with entourage filaing to drag more than
around 200 messages (or contacts) to the desktop in one go. The work round
is to drag them in smaller batches. More than 260 can go in one folder, it
is Entourage that is failing, not the finder.

Just select about 200, drag those over, then select the next 200 and drag
them into the same folder.
