Faded toolbar button

For unknown reasons I lost the "New E-mail Message" button in my toolbar. I went into View, Toolbar, and then into the "Customized Toolbar Dialogue Box". From "Files" I dragged the "New E-mail Message" button into my toolbar. The new button did appear in the toolbar, but it was faded. I could not change that, it stayed faded and is therefore, unusasble. What do I do to "unfade" it?
