Stupid question - you live in Vancouver, WA, as WA is on the border with
British Columbia and Vancouver, B.C., is on the border are they one and the
same place? Humour me, I'm easily confused...

Happy New Year (for you - my year is already two months old!)

Ahhh..... A chance to tell the famous Vancouver, USA story!

There is a Vancouver, B.C. and there is a Vancouver, WA. The B.C.
one is on the south border of Canada, just north of the Frazier
River. The Washington one is on the south border of Washington, just
north of the Columbia River and some ~250 miles (a whole bunch of
kilometers) south of Vancouver, B.C. BTW, both cities were founded by
Capt. Vancouver some bunch of years ago.

Now for the USA part:
USA is added as an informal way of identifying which Vancouver is the
subject.
Every once in awhile we get some Californians driving north with their
destination being Vancouver, B.C. And, they know it lies just north
of the Frazier River.... As they drive up through Oregon and get to
the Columbia River they think... "Oh, can this be the Frazier River
already?!" And they drive across the Columbia River and see a sign,
"Welcome to Vancouver".... And the Californians think, "Hot dam!
We're in Canada already!" Thus, Vancouver, USA signs can be found
along Interstate 5.

I once got some mail addressed to Vancouver, WA BC. They really
wanted me to get the mail. <G>

Take care,

Right, gotcha. I know exactly where the Canadian one is as my grandfather
was born there (I'm a real Heinz 57 me. Canuck, Scots, Irish, French, Yank,
Portuguese and Spanish - my ancestors built Santiago de Compostela
(according to my great-uncle John when he's been on the, ahem, 'barley
water')). Not being able to find the US version on my map of North America,
I assumed (wrongly obviously) that the Canadian version somehow crossed the
border. I really want to come over there and trace the Canadian Fonçecas
(and I know there are plenty over there).

Thanks for clearing up the confusion,

Warmest wishes,

Sarah
