Field Codes in text boxes

I am trying to put field codes in a series of text boxes laid over a table.
(Text with a similar set of field codes is referencing these labeled
specific areas of the table.)

The field codes look like { SEQ record \r 1 \* alphabetic } for the first
one and then like { SEQ record \* alphabetic } for the rest.

They all "work" in the sense that they use the last sequence value of the
"record" sequence. They don't work in the sense that the \r 1 doesn't reset
and they don't sequence.

Is there something I'm missing or is this just Too Hard/"unsupported"?

SEQ fields don't update automatically. Have you selected them and pressed F9
to update?

Yes, numerous times whilst playing around trying to figure out what was
going on. Still they all come up with the last ordinal used in that sequence
and they do not themselves sequence or follow the \r 1 directive. (This is
in W2K.)

I missed your subject line. If you're dealing with text boxes, then all bets
are off since they are in the drawing layer and hence not treated the same
as ordinary document text.
