Hi there,

is there a way to write a rule that keeps the most recent 100 messages received and send the rest of them to a junk folder?

AFAIK you are the only person that has ever asked that. I see so many
multiple problems with this that I wouldn't dare advise doing this.

Hi,

Weird - thunderbird and procmail dont have a problem providing the functionality and that is a open source program. Maybe you dont understand what I am asking for. What is your top three reasons for not doing this?

Cheers,

Hi Noah!

I see data loss as all three reasons. You can lose E-mail that you want
to read or keep.

Can you explain why you're wanting this? Maybe if you can help us
understand we'll be able to find a good solution that's "safe".

Bill,

Terrible reason(s) - you could say that for any rule. For instance a similar rule is to keep all messages that have a date in the header that is 30 days or less. Why does entourage have the rule? So people who read mail lists who are behind on them. Yes you could Loose email that you want to keep or read but still it is a user definition that allows the user flexibility. The rules in entourage could move it to another folder. That is what email rules are all about.

Reasons for it. Firstly I don't want to have more than the most recent 100 messages. so when another message for a list comes in then the oldest message is dropped or moved to another folder or trashed or whatever. For my purposes I've found great usage since I doubt I would read over 100 messages of the list anyways.

How do I put in a feature request to microsoft? Maybe I will just stay with thunderbird since their developers actually have a method for handling feature requests from users and including that functionality in future releases. As a user am I so far removed from that process in the M$ world?

Cheers,

Noah

In 3 pane view you can use custom arrangements to sort by date. Sort your
mail lists this way. It's easy to see older mail to delete.

A feature I use that helps read lists with lots of emails is to set up a
category that I call VIP. I add list members that I know are knowledgeable
in that list as a VIP to my Address Book. That way I can scan for their
replies knows I will get good info.

Hi there Diane,

Your response is not really helpful nor is it providing a solution to the particular feature request I am asking for.

I am looking to set up a rule that does this automatically. Plus I am not talking about creating a local mail list. I am talking about receiving mail from a mail list.

Is there a way to put in a feature request for allowing a rule to be added so I can just keep the 100 most recent messages in a folder?

Cheers,

Noah

I don't know of a way to do this with a rule or I would have given you the
info. I provided what could be used to help you sort and read your mail. If
you don't consider this helpful, then I'm sorry.

If you look under any of the Rule Actions, there are none that will do what
you want.

If you want people to volunteer their time to help you could be a little
more considerate of their efforts.

You can put in a feature request using the command "Send Feedback to
Microsoft" from the Help menu.

Hi there Diane,

I apologize if my responses seem inconsiderate - that is not my intention. It wastes a lot of time and effort when responses are so far off from the original question that it becomes a frustrating situation. Your first two responses suggested solutions that had nothing to do with the original issue.

Perhaps it would be helpful if you dont know the proper response to have somebody with a bit more experience respond.

Cheers,

Noah
