I work with special characters in editing. Characters
such as < and > are common. I need to do searches and
often replacements for such special characters. Being
new to Word, I am finding it difficult to use the Find
and Replace tool to do this job. Can someone help me?

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, < and > aren't really special characters in
F&R, which treats punctuation and spaces just like any letter. If you click
on More in the F&R dialog, the Special menu will give you access to
searching for paragraph marks, page breaks, comments, footnotes, etc.

Graham's reference for Wildcards will tell you even more about the full
power of F&R.

The characters you are looking for aren't considered to be
special characters. Those can be typed in just as they
are. If you are wondering what special characters are, or
how to search for them, there is a "more" button that
gives you a list of special characters to choose from.
