Find in contacts doesn't find any contacts

In our department we each have our own mailbox and an additional
mailbox "IT". My colleague and I have owner rights on this mailbox
and all its folders and we can add, delete and browse the contacts,
calendar.
However, if we try to do a search in this IT mailbox' contacts (Tools
-> Find -> Find) it never finds any contacts. It doesn't matter if we
type a person's name or a company name or a town, it always gives "no
items found".
All other contacts searches (in a pst file, or somebody elses mailbox)
work fine.
If I go into Outlook as "IT" and add my own mailbox as additional
mailbox, I can search both IT contacts and my own contacts.
There are other departments where people have similar problems
searching in a mailbox that isn't theirs.
The computers are running windows XP and Office 2003 + SP1. We
recently migrated from exchange server 5.5 to 2003. I'm not 100% sure
that we didn't have tis problem before the migration ; could it be a
configuration setting on the new server ?
I hope somebody who reads this can help me ; it's become a pain to
search manually into 3000 contacts...
