I have a row of 12 cells of data (let's call it row 2) and a row with the 12
months above it, January to December (let's call it row 1).

In another cell in another sheet I want to report the month where the first
bit of data appears. In other words the first 2 cells of row 2 may be empty
and then there is some data in the third cell. I want a formula that will
retrun me "March".

Hope somebody can help? I have tried some of the lookup & reference type
formulas but can't find anything relevant without doing a long "if" statement.

=INDEX(A1:L1,MATCH(TRUE,A2:L2<>"",0))

which you need to confirm/commit with control+shift+enter instead of just
with enter.
