First or Last Name?

Q

Greetings!

What determines the way a sender's name is alphabetized in the "From" column
of the inbox item list? Sometimes names are ordered by last name, sometimes
first name. Does an element in the sender's application determine this? Is
there a way to train Entourage to alphabetize by last name every time?

Many thanks,

First I see you haven't upgraded to 12.1.7. From your header:
User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/12.15.0.081119

Entourage 2008 has added new columns for First Name, Last Name.

Delete the "Name" column and add the First Name, Last Name columns. You can
drag them to make the order in the way you wish.

Thanks, Diane! Glad to have that news about the update and the new
functions it brings.

But I'm wondering -- actually my boss is wondering -- about the window that
lists the messages in the mail inbox .

Say, for example, she¹s looking for all of the messages from Mike Fisher.
She clicks on the FROM column header, which rearranges the messages in terms
of an alphabetical ordering of the senders' names. This way, in theory, she
can get a quick presentation of all of the messages from Mike Fisher merely
by scrolling down to the Fs. But it turns out she misses a few crucial
messages because some of them are listed not as ³Fisher, Mike,² but as ³Mike
Fisher² ‹ or ³M. Fisher²-- and alphabetized by the M in the first name.

Which leads me to speculate again that the ordering of first vs last names
is determined by the sender¹s e-mail application preferences. Right?

This is why I¹d like to find a way to alphabetize all of the names on her
list of incoming e-mail messages according to last name ‹ even if some of
the names there appear with the first name first.

Sorry for this long message. Any help would be appreciated.

Best,

Patrick

I also suggest you get out of the old preview pane below and use the new 3
pane view. It¹s really the best way to use Entourage. See ³Arrange by² for 3
column view.

You¹re doing it the hard way. Simply use the new Spotlight search box in the
top right of the window. Just enter the name in the box then select ³All
Messages² when the search window shows up and they will all be listed. The
search defaults to ³contains² and is general enough to get the info. If you
further want to edit the list, you click on the plus + button to further
define the criteria.

Spotlight search is so fast in Entourage 2008 you will be amazed. In the
past searching all messages could take a long time.

If you are having trouble with Spotlight see this link:
