Font problem after upgrading to Tiger

Steven Day

After upgrading to Tiger, I noticed that certain special characters, such as
bullets or apostrophes, no longer display properly. Instead, I get a
character that looks like a diamond with a question mark embedded. Any
ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Check what fonts you have selected for display in the preferences - try a
different font and see if that is better.

Then, open up the FontBook application and disable all out-dated and
duplicated fonts.

Then restart.

Thanks Barry. I tried what you suggested but to no avail. Any other ideas?

Might it be a problem related to "default encoding" for unspecified message
codes? Currently I have it set to UTF-8. Also, I never had this problem
before.

Best,

Yes, it could well be that. You have selected to have all unidentified
character sets treated as unicode - that is most unlikely to be the case.
Try setting the default character encoding to "Western European (Windows)" -
a much more likely scenario.

Bingo. Funny, I tried the other Western European default font, which didn't
work. The Windows version did, however.

Thanks for your help.
