Fonts - which way did they go?

I am running Office XP Pro on my work laptop and found, to my dismay, that my most often used fonts from Office 97 were not included with the new program. I installed the "old" fonts directly to the FONTS subdirectory under WINDOWS and can access the newly installed fonts from WORD. However, I cannot access the fonts, nor are they otherwise available, in the OUTLOOK fonts menu.

I've done all I can do trying to figure out how to make it work. I don't think it's a "path" problem because all the fonts on my hard drive reside in the same location. Does anybody have any ideas on how to correct this annoyance?
