Footer Field codes

I have a field code in the footer and it updates itself
even though the "update field codes" option is not
selected in the print options.

If the same field code is in the body of the document, it
does not update itself but in the footer it does and
should not.

Any ideas how to prevent it from updating itself when
printing ?

Lock the field -- select it and press Ctrl+F11. It won't update
automatically or manually until you unlock it with Ctrl+Shift+F11.

In addition to what Jay has said, note that all fields in the header and
footer are always updated (regardless of your Print Options setting)
whenever the document is repaginated. See "WD97: Fields Updated When
Document Repaginated" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=89953
