Footers - where are they measured from?

Could someone please tell me where footers are measured from in Word 2002.

I have experimented, and in some cases they seem to be from the actual
bottom of the page, while in others they seem to be added to the bottom
margin. On other occasions they are ignored!

It is very confusing.

Thanks

Noel

I read your message and the web reference with interest.

Can you clarify one thing for me?

I note that "Word reserves space for the header and footer outside the top
and bottom margins." I thought this would mean that if I set my bottom
margin to 3 cm and my footer to 1 cm, the footer text would appear 2 cm from
the bottom but it appears with the top of its letters 3cm from the bottom.

Thanks.

When your bottom margin is 3 cm and the footer margin is 1 cm, the bottom of
the footer is at 1 cm (that is, Word allows 1 cm between the footer and the
bottom of the page). How close this is to the bottom margin depends on your
font size, how many lines of text you have, etc. There is no way to set a
specific distance between the top of the footer and the bottom margin.
