format problems - mixed numbers/text

L

Lee Harris web

Sorry if this post appears twice, but my Outlook Express seems not to
be posting so am doing this via the web.

I have a field that is importing a column of data from excel. most
items are just simple numbers, but some numbers have a character after
them (eg 7*), so are not importing properly but showing up as "0" in
the merge.

I think I just need a field code to make sure this item is formatted
as a text item but cannot find this anywhere, nor even a list of field
codes allowed in Words own help system

thanks in advance if anyone can help me with this

Hi Lee,

I'm not seeing it twice, so it's good that you've posted again :) The
news servers were having some problems, yesterday, so that might explain
the problem you were having.

Doug's answer is basically correct, but doesn't tell you HOW you have to
force the data to be text. Look for the topic "Mail merge loses Excel
data" in the mail merge FAQ on my website.
