Formatting Word with graphic inserts

HELP! I am hardly new to Word; I have done a 300 page book
camera ready using elaborate foreign fonts. But Word and
graphics (photos, charts, etc) will be teh end of me. I
have done a Kinko-printed textbook for my college class
(380 pages) with countless photos, maps, charts etc. They
are a nightmare. Over Christmas break I reedited the book
deleting and adding materials and arranged a few photos.
That effort disrupted the entire book. Pictures down over
footnotes, etc. I didn't realize that moving a photo could
even change the previous page arrangements. So I spent 4
weeks improving my book and ended up with a diminished
output with countless misalignments.
I use Word 2000. Do subsequent versions improve on
handling graphics? Is there a good treatment of them.
Example. adding a caption to a photo seems a nightmare as
well. After clicking insert caption, I can spent 10
minutes trying to allign the caption and the photo and
trying to group them. Then of course after I group them I
have to resent wrap. I hope I am missing some little
detail. So let me know if 2003 Word is an improvement. Are
there any third party aids?

I hear you. I've been using Word for ages as well and no
matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get control of
placement of graphics. There are too many options and
nothing intuitively obvious.
