formula needed

I am atempting to compare four cells, throw out the two
highest and then add the two lowest. I also need to
compare four cells, throw the one highest out and add the
remaining three.

You can use combinations of the LARGE, SMALL, and SUM functions:

1)
=LARGE(A1:A4,3)+LARGE(A1:A4,4)
or
=SMALL(A1:A4,1)+SMALL(A1:A4,2)


2)
=SUM(A1:A4)-LARGE(A1:A4,1)

First question : =SUM(SMALL(D14,{1,2})) (assuming your four numbers
are in D14)
Second question : =SUM(SMALL(D14,{1,2,3})) (assuming your four numbers
are in D14) or :
= SUM(D14) - LARGE(D14,1)
