Formula stays as cell value instead of calulating. What's up with that?

I copied data from an Access DBase and now trying to perform functions on a
particular column. It's a simple formula. =LEFT(A2,4)

A2 = 1000 so it should return a value of 1000. Instead it just sits there
with =LEFT(A2,4) as the value of that cell.

Any ideas what could be my problem?
I have copied the data to a new wksheet. Re - formatted my columns and still
no different results.
Thanks for any assistance on this matter.

Are the cells formatted as text? try formatting as something else and put
the formula in again

If you have a great whack of these cells, use Edit>Replace

What: =
With: =

Replace All.
