Formulas with varying through ranges

I built a 2 column array that has dates in column 1 and amounts in column 2.
I would like to build a sum() formula that will vary based upon the date I
chose. For example: =sum(b1:vlookup(date,array,2)). My method doesn't work
but I can't be the first person to have this problem. Any suggestions
