FP generated file names with "." in the name

K

Keith

When using FP 2000 Themes, FP creates file names for the buttons with "."s
in the file name. i.e.

MSFPnav2n=MSFPpreload("_derived/page3.htm_cmp_expeditn110_vbtn.gif");

Our web servers are on VMS and don't allow dots in file names. When the
website is posted to the server, VMS removes all the dots that are imbedded
in the file names. Of course, the html code still refers to the file names
with the dots and therefore doesn't work. Is there any easy way to keep FP
from generating illegal file names?

No
and they are not illegal, only unsupported by your server (which is not the norm)
- don't use themes (graphic nav bars and banners) and use text nav bars and FP won't create the files

....sounds just like the security feature in IIS's "URL Scan", which can be
changed to accomodate the dots.

Does the new version of FrontPage use non-standard file names as well?
Microsoft seems to slip non-standard features into their software to try to
force people to use only their software/servers, etc. Not using Themes
takes out about 2/3's of the power of FP. If the problem isn't fixed in the
new version of FP, can anyone recommend another website editing software
that is compatible with non Microsoft servers?

Thanks

This is pure hyperbole, you know?

I realize that's not the subject of the post, but it just gets my goat.

Keith,

Did you actually read the Stefan's post before you replied
to it? Normally servers can handle dotted file names, and MS
IIS also can have an issue with them. It is just a setting
the host needs to change.

I won't even share my opinions on themes being 2/3 of FPs
power

Yes, I read the post and I checked with the host (service provider).
Allowing "."s in file names is not an option on their VMS servers. And
changing my service provider is not an option either. So it looks like I
can use FP without Themes, or find another editor. Don't know which is best
since I'm not familiar with other software.

Any suggestions?

I would suggest to create your own site, and not rely on FP themes...be
original!

I resisted that...

VMS 2.0 webserver should not have that issue anymore, it is
now Apache based
