Frequent crashes checking mail

Steven Paul Day

Just switched back to Entourage after using Mail and am having problems
checking mail now. Entourage frequently crashes when checking for new mail.
This used to happen with IMAP accounts but now seems to be related to POP
accounts as well. I checked and verified the keychain, which did have some
issues with those POP account passwords. But the problem persisted. Anyone
else having similar problems. I only went back to Entourage because Office
04 is coming out next month and looks much improved. But this problem is
rather annoying.

Thanks.

Do you mean to say that it happens every time you check mail? If so, see
this advice I gave earlier:
-----------------
Recently, malformed junk mail has exploited a bug in Entourage's Junk Mail
Filter that causes the entire program to crash when Entourage attempts to
download and process the message. Microsoft has posted a fix at their web
site:
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=837065>

This a comment from David Cortright [MS] on this issue:
"I'm certain the bug will be fixed in Office 2004."

If you are crashing on receiving mail, it could be due to a corrupt
message on the server. Work through the steps on the "Crashes" page on The
Entourage Help Page.
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/help/send_receive/crashes_hangs.html>
-----------------

If it happens frequently but not all of the time, that indicates a more
serious problem. Try repairing permissions.
For OS 10.2/10.3:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

For OS 10.1.5:
Download the Repair Privileges utility, free from Apple, and run it:
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106900>

Run Disk First Aid. Instructions on how to run it in OS X are located on
the Apple Knowledge Base.
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214>

If none of that works, it's possible your database is so corrupt that
Entourage crashes when it tries to access it. In that case, rebuild your
database. First, go to Entourage -> Turn Off Office Notifications. Now,
quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage holding down the Option key.
When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild. If
that doesn't work, re-try the process, instead choosing to perform an
Advanced Rebuild.
