Front end back end problem

I split a database used by 7 users into a front end back
end by linking each of the users front end to the tables
on the back end which is located on a server. Every once
in a while the users complain that they reciece an error
stating "Could not update; currently locked"; meaning
either a collision occured or time out occured correct? I
have no idea on how to find out, or any ideas on how to
stabilize this situation, any suggestions?
