frozen email on entourage

In trying to open an email in entourage, I got a little multi colored
circle that just kept on going. It never stopped and I couldn't open
anything in Entourage. I was able to move to other applications on my
iMac but entourage was frozen. No escape keys or control command
delete functions worked. Any suggestions for escaping something that
freezes in this application?

I get the same thing every time I try to read a weekly bulletin from
directrons.com. The "ONLY" escape from the spinning beach ball (or
whatever) is use the OSX "Force Quit" under the Finder's Apple. When
you open Force Quit, you will note Entourage is not responding. Click
on Entourage and the Finder will Quit the application.

I get the same message every week and cannot open it to unsubscribe. I
just select and delete the message.

Before opening such a message, or even selecting it to delete it
subsequently, make sure you deactivate the preview pane (View>Preview
Pane>None), as previewing the message also leads to these crashes. You could
theoretically drag these messages to the desktop and then open them with a
text editor such as Apple's Text Edit to extract and view any text there is
inside them; that way, you may find an unsubscribe address in the text body.

Michel,

I do not use the Preview pane but that is good too know and may help the
other person. There is something used in the directron.com html code
that really trashes Entourage. Do not, repeat do not, sign up for their
sale notices. I have not been able to unsubscribe and they do not
accept emai messages. The unsubscribe thing is in the message that
trashes Entourage so I am in a Catch-22. The workaround I use is to
delete anything from them before trying to open it.

Hi there,

have you tried using the method I described in my earlier post? You might be
able to find the unsubscribe link when you open the message in TextEdit; in
that case, just copy it and paste it into your browser's address bar.

I have a similar problem but the spinning circle starts at time of
opening entourage, so I can not get to view mode. The entire program
freezes and only thin I can do is force quit. How can I fix this?

Hold down the Shift key when launching Entourage; this will disable any
scripts set to run at startup. If you get Entourage to work, see if there is
not a mail message stuck in your outbox; if there is, it is likely that this
message has become corrupted and that it crashes Entourage when the
application tries to send the messages in the outbox. Disable the preview
pane (as described in one of my earlier posts), delete the message, empty
the Trash folder, then try to restart Entourage without pressing any keys to
see if the problem has disappeared.

I am waiting on a new message from directron.com to be able to test your
tip I do not use the preview option and have not tied to drag the bad
message to the desktop. Will do the next time one shows up.

If you an Entourage user, do not (repeat do not) give
http://www.directron.com/ your email address.

I frequently have the problem of Entourage freezing and that little
multi-coloured circle whirring for a while, then it starts going again
- it happens all the time, and often I can't even finish a sentence
before it freezes for a few seconds, sometimes even minutes. I've
wondered if it is associated with my machine synchronising all
folders, which I've not managed to find a way of desisting it from
doing (see my other post), but maybe there's something else going on?
How do I deal with this? I am reluctant to keep forcing quit whenever
it happens as it usually doesn't last long, but is a total pain...

Have you considered actually letting it finish synchronization? The very
first sync takes a while, but once that's done, future syncs are faster.

Thanks. It seems to keep on synchronising, so it's not a matter of
waiting for it to finish. I tried disabling the synchronisation
altogether, unticking the schedules etc. but it hasn't worked. If it
would allow me to manually synchronise, it would be much better - then
I could synchronise only when I wanted to send and receive messages.
Better still if it would allow me to only synchronise the in and
outboxes while I am working on Entourage and then just do a final
synchronise of the whole thing at the end and beginning of my session.
Is there any way to do this?

Pinwheel... spinning beachball... Entourage 2004
I'll take that as a "No". ; )

I advise letting it finish so it can complete the initial
synchronization. After that, subsequent syncs will go much faster.

At this location, we found that having too many items in folders
caused this eternal synchronisation (thousands of items).
Try sorting out your Inbox and Sent Items into folders of less than
500 items. Make sure that these folders are not subfolders of Inbox or
Sent Items, but sit at the root level in your mailbox.

There is a script that might help keep your quota under control. It's broken
in Leopard and we're waiting for an upgrade.
