ftp anyone?

prolly outside the remit of frontpage but here goes

i have setup my pc with an ftp server (so students can logon to it from the
web)

when they access via ftp address - there's no prompt to logon/pass

i realise i can log them on individually by building into their url
and also they can logon via File menu

but how can i force the ftp login prompt (is the job of the server? or can i
simpy force it via url?)

Assuming you are using the FTP service bundled with IIS, just right click on
the FTP site, click Properties, click on the Security Accounts tab and
uncheck Allow Anonymous Connections.

actually i'm not using the built-in iis ftp server - as i remember, i could
only set login/pass when "allow anon" was Checked (if i unchecked it the
login/pass was greyed ?) i give up in the end and downloaded 3rd party one
(Cerberus ftp server)

but you have answered the question - it's evidently the job of the ftp
server to prompt the user for a login - thanx

just for future reference & general interest

it turned out to be a problem with IE6 (or maybe IE per se) - the browser
automatically attempts to login as 'anonymous' to the ftp server, and since
no 'anonymous' user was set up in the ftp server, IE reports no access to
folder (which meant manual login via file menu)

i had to setup an "anonymous" user with no folder access and check 'no
anonymous login allowed'

so now IE attempts to login as "anonymous" by default, the ftp server
recognises the user name & wont let it logon without a pass and thus issues
a login/pass prompt )
