Functional Manager - Use Custom Fields or Outline Codes

Denise

Hi all,

First, let me say in advance that I'm sure glad I found this group.
I've been perusing it for a while this afternoon and I just know that
it's going to make my life so much easier. Just a bit of background on
me -- I've been "piddling" with Project for years but just recently got
some training in it (very basic... not much help). Anyway, now we're
putting ProjSvr03 in place here at the office and I have ProjPro on my
machine. I've spent this afternoon learning how to work multiple
skills per resource into the mix. And now I have another question that
I haven't been able to find the answer to.

I'm thinking that I would want to use a custom field to list the
functional manager for a particular resource instead of an outline
code. However, that manager also fits into our RBS (which I set up as
a "copy" of our orgchart). How do I indicate where in the RBS a
manager fits if I use a custom field? Or maybe I should use an Outline
Code?

Thanks in advance!

Denise

You can do both. For each functional manager in your organization, you
should place him/her at one level above the resources he/she manages in the
RBS field. Create a custom enterprise Resource outline code called
Functional Manager that is simply a list of all functional managers in the
company, then specify a value for everyone in the Enterprise Resource Pool.
I believe you will want to use an outline code field for this purpose so
that the information will appear in the OLAP cube and be accessible in
Portfolio Analayzer views. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Dale....

So MUCH to learn with this tool. I still think it's going to benefit
our organization immensely but I just have to figure out how to use it.
Thanks so much for being helpful to the newbie. ;-)

Project Server is not easy software to learn or to master. If you have not
done so already, I would recommend you purchase our books on Project Server
2003, available by clicking the URL in my signature block. Hope this helps.
