Furious with upgrade

S

slandissteward

I will never trust microsoft again. I allowed the most recent upgrade
to Entourage and right off the bat, it asked me if I wanted to import
data from a bunch of different versions, none of which was Entourage
2004 which I was already using.

Second, after I installed the upgrade, my projects (DOZENS OF THEM!)
were GONE. COMPLETELY GONE. I sent a message to Microsoft but of course
they ignored me.

Now, I am getting quadruplicates of SOME emails on my .mac account but
not on my hotmail account, both of which are managed by Entourage. I
can delete one copy of the mail but the rest of them just sit there
taking up space. I am also unable to delete SOME single emails on my
..mac account.

Everything worked great before the upgrade. Is Microsoft getting
incredibly sloppy or what?

to Entourage and right off the bat, it asked me if I wanted to import

This indicates that Entourage did not find your Microsoft User Data folder
in your Documents folder. Is it possible that you accidentally moved your
data? Be sure to check the trash.

To find your old database, search for "Microsoft User Data" (without the
quotes).

Move the entire identity folder you want to use to the Office Identities
folder that Entourage is recognizing. Your identity is named "Main" by
default. Be sure to rename one so you do not overwrite. Your identity folder
can contain more than one identity.

Switch Identities to view your old mail. If you have not used the new
identity, delete it. If you have used it and want to combine the new mail
with your original database, drag each folder to the desktop from one
identity. This creates an MBOX file. Switch identities. Drag the MBOX files
into the folder window of Entourage.

You can delete the old folder after you are satisfied with the transfer.
Second, after I installed the upgrade, my projects (DOZENS OF THEM!)
were GONE. COMPLETELY GONE. I sent a message to Microsoft but of course
they ignored me.

Projects are stored in ~/Documents/Office Projects/. Have you checked there.
They are associated with the missing database. The data should still be
there. See Project FAQs for more info:

If you have the option set to leave mail on the server, the new Entourage
database does not know they have already been downloaded. Open your Account.
Under the Options tab select "Get all messages left on server". After doing
this check "Allow online access" to be doubly sure all messages are
downloaded to Entourage. More on "Allow online access"

Companion script for your duplicate messages: Nuke Messages Author: Philip

I have a bunch of older duplicates myself I'd like to dump, and the link you
provide doesn't work.

I did search through the site and found the item you mention, but it simply
doesn't do what it's supposed to do. The instructions are peculiar, about
selecting two messages outside the limits of the imported messages. It makes
less sense when you follow the instructions, get a prompt that the
duplicates are deleted, and find that it's just not so.

Try this delete duplicates script:

Remove Duplicate Messages in a Folder Author: Allen Watson

Eliminate duplicate messages in a folder of Microsoft Entourage
Messages must be sorted in date order, and all must be selected

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/scripts/Remove_duplicateMsgs.sit>

This one is simple to use.

Well, it runs, but keeps giving me a message that AppleEvents timed out, and
that's even when I've only selected a handful of messages that contain
duplications :(

Are the messages on your computer? How many messages are selected?

I did a Google search for ³AppleEvents timed out²

Here is good explanation for FileMaker Pro.

This error can happen when an event takes an unusually long time to
complete. If an event takes longer than two minutes, the Apple Event Manager
reports a time-out error. This error can sometimes be generated when:

You are using the FileMaker Pro Show event to find records in a large
database
FileMaker Pro presents a dialog box waiting for the scripter's (user's)
response

An event takes a long time to occur, such as opening a networked file when
there is heavy network traffic.

To prolong the amount of time AppleScript waits for a response: Use the
"with timeout" statement.

An example of such a statement that increases the wait time to five minutes
is:

tell application "FileMaker Pro"
with timeout of 300 seconds
Show (every Record whose Cell "Product" contains "FileMaker Pro")
end timeout
end tell

<http://www.filemaker.com/help/08-Scripts14.html>

One of the scripters will have to help with modifying the timeout script.
I'm not sure about the Show line for Records etc. You could try the Delete
Duplicates script on a smaller number of messages and see if that helps.

Diane, it runs for about 5 seconds before delivering that message and even
produces it when I select a mere handful on my Power Mac G5 Quad.
