Future of Entourage?

D

Dave Leer

The more Apple continues to develop their own mail, calendar, spreadsheets,
presentation, and word processing software, the more I
wonder what MS has planned for the future of Entourage and Office for mac.
MS stopped developing IE for mac after Safari came out
and even Adobe stopped producing Premiere for mac with the success of Final
Cut Pro.

1. What do you guys think about the future of Entourage?

2. Does Entourage mail and calendar still hold many benefits over Apple's
solutions?

Thanks.

I switched to Entourage a few months ago. I was using Personal
Organizer for my calendar/address/todo list and Apple Mail for Email.
With the demise of Personal Organizer, and the inadequacy (in my
opinion) of its replacement, I did some serious looking. While I like
Apple Mail, I find a number of inadequacies with Address Book and ICal:
- the data files are not portable (easily) unless one also subscribes
to .mac. I daily backup my data files (which I can do with entourage).
This is not an issue with me for email since I use an imap server
- iCal still does not support repeating todo's, which to me is a major
deficiency
- Entourage "projects" are much more in tune with a GTD system than the
cute color coded calendars

It would be great if apple would come up with a seemless PIM solution
combining email, calendar, address book and small scale project
management, but it does not seem (at least for the previews of Leopard)
that they are there yet. Although some of the features for the new
Apple Mail suggest that they may be starting to think in that direction.

They have publicly committed to at least five more years of supporting and
actively developing for the mac platform. On past release periods that means
at least two more major updates.

solutions?

Yes.
