GAL improvements in SP2

I've seen messages here about the improvement in Office 2004 SP2 in
connecting to the Global Address List with Exchange servers. One
person mentioned the new method was much like the Windows method, that
is, autofilling the address as you type, instead of manually having to
click the "Check Names" button.

Is it true that SP2 added this feature? If so, how do you enable it?
I see no such feature or any way to turn it on.

It is true.

One, you need a Directory Services account. An Exchange account has an
associated directory services server you can enter in the Advanced tab.

The preference, which is on by default, is in the Compose section: "Search
Directory Services when addressing messages".

I have an LDAP server specified in the Advanced section of the account
settings.

This option is checked.

But I still have to click on "Check Names" to search for names in the
GAL.

What could be wrong?

If you go to the address book view and click on your directory service
account (has the Exchange account name), does it populate with a list of
contacts or not? If not, does it populate with matching contacts when you
put in some name in the quick filter (upper right)? -- This will tell us
whether we're just not able to connect to the directory at all.

If you bring up the progress window, and move it so it's visible while
you're addressing a message, does it show a connection to the directory
server while you're typing in address information?

It might be that the server response is slow and that it'll take some large
number of seconds to come back with a response list. You'd see a list of
local addresses, and then later when the server responds, a list of
directory service entries appended.

Yes, it takes a while to display addresses. I guess I need to be more
patient as there are a lot of people in the GAL.

Thanks for your help!
