German characters appers garbeled when viewing Excel file in Internet Explorer

Hi
I have an excel file on my web server that include German charachters.
If I download the file to my local HD (press 'save' on the explorer
dialog box) and then open it with Excel - it looks fine. However - if I
select the 'open' option in Explorer and open the file directly (within
the broweser) - the german characters look garbled.
Can anyone help ?
