Getting IT guy to do his job

S

Steven

I have a situation where there's an Exchange 2000 server in place for
dozens of PCs and (1) Mac with Entourage 2004.

The IT guy says Exchange 2000 won't sync calendars or public folders
with Entourage 04 until Exchange 03 (which he has planned for second
half of 2005).

What can I succinctly tell this guy about what reasonable tasks/updates
he needs to undertake with Exchange 2000 to get it talking to Entourage
04 in the next few weeks?

Thanks in advance.

Public folders are not very well supported, but calendar sure are...

Easy enough:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support.aspx?pid=exchange

The page mentions that all you need is Exchange 2000-SP2.

None, really. Entourage X 10.1.4 and up use LDAP version 3, where as prior
versions used LDAP version 2. In order to get Entourage X 10.1.4 and up to
use Exchange, it has to be Enchange 2000 SP2 and up. No earlier versions
will work. If the Exchange server software isn't 2000 SP2, Entourage 2004
will not work.

Hope that helps

This is all helpful (although technically a bit over my head) but it does
raise a question for me.

Right now, the way I keep my work calendar on Entourage 2004 at home in sync
with my work calendar in Outlook 2003 at the office, is to use my Palm
device as a "go between," i.e., I sync the Palm on both the PC and the Mac,
and it does a pretty good job of keeping them coordinated (although the
Entourage conduit does at times get a little confused and tends to fail to
sync some events). I also then use Paul Berkowitz's wonderful "Sync
Entourage iCal" script to sync my Entourage calendar to an iCal calendar
that my wife subscribes to, so she can check my work schedule.

Here's what I want to know: can eliminate the Palm sync go-between by
logging into my work calendar over the internet from Entourage at home? I
know we're running Exchange Server on the server at work, but that's all I
know.

Thanks!

Well I suspect you need Exchange for that and then, it pretty much
depends on how open the Exchange server is.
The server I use allows me to connect through Webmail from home.
I just setup my Exchange account at home as well (using the webmail
address for the server) and Entourage syncs all the information the same
way it does from work.

I guess you could also create a script to dump all the calendar
information from ENoutrage into a file and transfer this file on another
machine too, but then it becomes a bit more tedious...

Thanks for this information, Corentin. I guess I'll need to ask our IT
person. I don't really want to get my work email at home... I'd just like to
be able to view my calendar in Entourage.

Thank you,

Steve

Ouch... That's more difficult. I'm not sure Entourage will let you get
the calendar without the e-mails (and the address book).

You can set it to partially receive Exchange messages though. That could
limit the bandwidth the operation would take over.
