"Ghost" Entourage 2004 Account

I have a "ghost" account in Entourage 2004. I originally had to
re-create my account several times to get it to work right and now my
Main Identity (Exchange) is working fine. However, there is an account
that displays in the folder list and on the Mail tab of the Accounts
dialog box, but NOT on the Exchange tab. This account cannot be opened
(edited) or deleted. Highlight it, click Delete - nothing...

If I try to send mail from the account it gets into a continual loop
which will crash Entourage, send a report to Microsoft then restart
Entourage and then crash, send, restart, etc. I have rebuilt the
database (which stopped the crashing problem) but the ghost account
still exists.

If I look in the Identities folder, there is just one - the Main
Identity.

I am running Entourage 2004 and Mac OS X 10.3.4.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Any suggestions?

Many thanks...

P.S. I never used Entourage X - I switched from Outlook 2001.

This sounds like it could be database corruption. Entourage 2004 has a
database utility that will give you the option to verify or rebuild your
database. Even if the verify is ok, I would still do a rebuild with your
symptoms.

To rebuild: Hold Option key down when launching Entourage. For more details
see:

Please let us know if this works.

Thanks for this suggestion. I have rebuilt the Entourage database four
times this month - sorry I didn't mention that previously. Also ran
permissions repair in Mac OS X - as that's fixed funky stuff with
Word.

The ghost account shows in the folder listing. I can add new folders
to the account and can place messages in those folders - but can't
open it or edit it. I can make the "ghost" account the default
account, but then it will crash Entourage when I try to send mail.
Actually, it just enters a loop where is crashes, quits Entourage,
sends mail to Microsoft, relaunches Entourages, quits again, etc...

Any other suggestions? I'll leave it there for now until I have time
to do a *complete* rebuild, but I'm willing to try any other
suggestions that might actually remove this account.

Thanks again for the help...

Turn OFF the preview pane, Quit and re-start Entourage, then immediately see
if you can edit this account.

Thanks much for the suggestion. I never use the Preview Pane (too visually
distracting for me), although I did try turning it on and off again... It's
possible it was one at one point when I created the account, so I tried
deleting all Entourage preferences, which didn't seem to make a difference
at all... Unfortunately, the account that isn't, still is!

Just to recap for anyone else who might have seen this:

P.S. I briefly used Entourage X but I moved my account from Outlook 2001. I
did not import anything from a previous version of Entourage.

It will probably take the complete rebuild to fix.

If that does not work, please contact me off list so we can work on this. Be
sure to fix the address when replying.
