graph.exe error in Powerpoint stops the ability to insert graphs

A user who is a heavy Excel and PowerPoint user has suddenly developed an
issue with inserting graphs in PowerPoint. The user has Office Standard 2003
with Office 2003 SP 2. When attempting to insert a graph into a PowerPoint,
immediately after choosing graph, the user only sees the example of the excel
spread sheet below. The actual box which should contain the sample graph is
blank, and the surrounding box appears to look like an “insert text†or
“insert file†box outline, instead of the sample graph. The slide is
essentially frozen. When exiting out by attempting to close the excel spread
sheet in the lower portion of the slide, this error appears:

Microsoft Office 2003 component has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

It then requests that the error report be sent to Microsoft.

In the application Event log we see:

Source: Application Error
Category: None
Event ID : 1000

Description:
Faulting application graph.exe, version 11.0.6550.0, faulting module
graph.exe , version 11.0.6550.0, fault address 0x00053f9d

When I select the link to the Help and Support in the Event ID, I get a
generic description of the application error, and a list of KB articles that
do not apply.

This machine runs Windows XP SP2 and has all the latest updates. We have
already uninstalled office, and re installed it, and Office SP 2 again. We
did an XP System Restore to a point earlier in the day. This did not fix the
issue. We have also cleaned up temp files, etc, to no avail. Any ideas?

If you are also using Norton AV then turn off the "Enable Office
Plug-in" option found in Norton Options under the Miscellaneous
section.

Beth,

Thank you for your prompt response.

We are not using Norton AV. We run McAfee AV Enterprise version 8.

Also, the user was able to work with graphs on this machine until last week.
The user thinks he may have seen an error in Powerpoint while working with a
graph, but could not tell me what the error was.

Hi Ken,

Based on my research, I would suggest you follow the steps below to narrow
down this issue.

#1. Reregister graph.exe
===================
Click Start - Run, type the following in the text box and click OK.
(Including the quotation marks)
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\graph.exe" /regserver

#2. Update your video/printer card driver
===========================
A corrupted video card driver or printer driver may cause the problem in
PowerPoint. Have you updated the printer driver and video driver? If not,
please try removing and installing the latest video driver and the printer
driver from the manufacturer.

#3. Repair Office 2003
=================
1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office 2003 entry on the right pane and click
Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select "Reinstall and Repair" and click Next.
7. Select "Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation" and "Restore
my Start Menu Shortcuts".
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

#4. Disable the antivirus (McAfee) software.

If the suggestions don't help, please follow the steps below to manually
remove and install Office 2003.

1. Quit all running programs.

2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

3. After you install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, click Start
menu-> All Programs-> Windows Install Clean Up.

4. Highlight Microsoft Office 2003 entry in the list and then click Remove.
Click OK and wait for the process to end. Then, click Exit to close the
Windows Installer Cleanup utility.

5. Click Start menu-> Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box and press Enter.

6. Locate the registry keys below and click Delete from the Edit menu.
Click OK on the following warning dialog box.
Note: Please go to File | Export and backup all the registry first. '#'

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{9###
0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}

Quit Registry Editor.

7. Delete or rename the following folders if they exist:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Office
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office

If the issue is with Office Updates, also remove the following:
C:\Program Files\OfficeUpdate11

8. Click Start menu-> Run, type "%Temp%" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box and press Enter.

9. Empty the Recycle Bin.

10. To remove MAPI, search for and rename the following files/folders:
C:\Windows\system32\mapi32.dll
C:\Windows\system32\mapisvc.inf
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Msmapi
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi

11. Restart your computer and install Office 2003 again.

Hope it helps.

Please try the suggestions and let me know the result at your earliest
convenience.

Ada Pan
