graphical calender option

I like MS Project Pro 2003, but it does not do hourly projects well - In the
outlook calendar, I can schedule hourly easily, but it doesn’t display
graphically with the gantt chart like project. Is there anyway to make this
work - or will it be in the next version of Office?

The Calendar view is a simple view designed to display data for a few tasks
(filtered). It is not useful at all for a lot of tasks. It hasn't changed
much if at all since it first came out and I suspect it won't in the future.
So, what you have is what you get! The Gantt chart is designed as the main
working interface and reporting tool.

Hi Pete

One suggestion would be in your gantt chart view to choose format / timescale,
set the middle tier to days and the bottom tier to hours (you might have to
set the bottom one first & then the middle one - this dialog box behaves a
bit strangely at times).

I think it will give you what you're after.

Thanks Julie, I appreciate the suggestion.

I did try that but with a lot of reoccurring tasks the only way that I could
find to input the actual hour of the tasks was to change the timescale as you
suggested and then drag the bar around in the gantt chart – to make this
worse, it appears that you have to do this for each instanced of the
reoccurring task. This is quite time consuming when you could have 10 or so
reoccurring tasks with 20-30 instances each. Perhaps there is an easier way
to do this that I am not aware of in project.

Hi Pete,

You may also want to consider changing the Date Format in your project to
show time as well as date.
Go to Tools > Options, General tab.
From the Date Format drop-down, select a format that shows date and time or
just time.

I'm not sure I follow your comment below about "reoccuring" tasks, but you
may also want to check Help for information on Recurring tasks.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Pete,

You don't need to drag around the bars for a recurring task. Make sure you
enter the time of day along with the date in the Recurring Task dialog.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Sorry, I guess I’m just not getting it…

Glen’s suggestion:

When I try to enter a time along with the date in the tasks “Recurring task
information†dialog box, I get an error message asking me to enter a valid
date. I did a search on the suggested website under “recurringâ€, but did not
see anything.

JulieS suggestion:

When I Go to Tools > Options, General tab and look for the date format
drop-down, I don’t see any. There are some drop-downs on the calendar tab,
but they don’t seem to be what I’m after. I’m using MS Project 03
professional, if there is a difference. I am using a modified calendar.

Just to restate my original question, I’m trying to enter a recurring task
with about twenty recurrences, and I’m trying to show this project on an
hourly basis (The time of the recurrence is at the same day and hour for each
recurrence). So far, I have not found a way to set this up on the primacy
task (the main dialog box of the first recurrence) that will change all of
the subsequent recurrences at once, and not have to manually adjust each one.
Whew – I think I just used the word “recurrenceâ€, way too many times! This
would be easy, if not for trying to show it by the hour.

Thanks for trying to help,

Pete.

Hi,

A. It's tools, options, View not general
B. That isn't even necessary. Project anywhere accepts 12/07/06 13:56 as a
format for date/time entry even when teh date format is different

Awesome!

It works, and I get it!

Once I changes the format as you said, it opened up the possibility of
inputting the time into the reoccurring task.

Thanks so much for your help,

Pete.
