graphics showing as red x

A user brought me a ppt document because all of her graphics have turned to
red X's.

When you double click the pictures some say:
"This is an imported picture, not a group. Convert it to a Microsoft Office
drawing?" but saying yes or know has no effect it remains a red x.

Others open in the Microsoft photo editor and then when you close the photo
editor they appear in PPT.

What is happening with this? How can she get he pictures to show back up?

I was not able to reproduce the "Red X" problem with one of my clients who
recently stumbled upon it but I did not find any solution in the link at
"rdpslides.com". My client did mention, however, that he had been
compressing the images in his presentation. When I unchecked compression,
the image appeared again. Although I could not reproduce the Red X by using
compression, deselecting compression options and hitting "Apply" did restore
the image. Interestingly, I get a Red X when I print a completely different
PPT to PDF. Most images will print but some of the clip art is replaced
with the Red X. I created a separate PowerPoint file with compression and
printed to PDF but got the same results, regardless of PDF options (Acrobat
PDF Writer, v. 5.0). If I print to PDF in Grayscale, I get all images, no
X's.

I am not to familiar with the workings of Acrobat. Hopefully Steve will drop by
and insert some words of wisdom. Which version of PowerPoint are you and your
client using?
