Gray Bar across emails in Inbox for Entourage:Mac 10.1.6

I have had email in my in box as well as saved files or trashed files
get a gray bar across them within the window. When I click on them or
my cursor goes over that particular email(s), my entourage freezes, I
have to force quit and restart. Or, the entire Entourage program
quits. The most frustrating thing is that I lose that email that the
gray bar is hiding. I can not access it again.

When I rebuild the desktop, this sometimes is taken care of. But, my
entire Entourage recently crashed. I rebuilt it using the advanced
due to all the problems I was experiencing and it never came back up
after that. I lost everything - all emails & all addresses. I
currently have less than 400 emails in my system now - why is this
happening?

It's a sign of database corruption.

Rebuilding the desktop is a Classic fix. Rebuilding Entourage's database can
often fix problems, but you will not necessarily get back the corrupted
files.

I suggest you start over with a new database and import your contacts and
mail into the new database.

Once you do this get into the routine of creating backups.
