Grey Lines in Box

L

ldanto

Some time ago my Inbox window got a bunch of grey lines,
instead of (or in between) e-mails and I can't figure out
what's happening. They vary in length. If I scroll
down, with them in the window, it often will
automatically unexpectedly quit.

Is it a virus or something? My Virex 7.2 doesn't detect
anything and it's rare for a Mac to get a virus anyway.

I use a Power Mac G4 with Mac OS if it matters.

Any advice appreciated.

Try rebuilding the database.

In Entourage 2004, you must launch the Microsoft Database Utility.
1. Launch Entourage, holding down the ³Option² key. Or, launch the
Database Utility separately; it is located in HD/Applications/Microsoft
Office 2004/Office/.
2. If you are prompted, allow the Database Utility to quit open Office
applications.
3. Once the Database Utility is open, select your identity from the list at
the top.
4. Click the ³Rebuild Database² button, and click ³Continue.²

In Entourage X, first go to Entourage -> Turn Off Office Notifications.
Now, quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage holding down the Option key.
When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild. If
that does not fix the problem, repeat the procedure, instead opting to do
the Advanced Rebuild.

In Entourage 2001, quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage holding down
the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose to do a
Typical Rebuild. If that does not fix the problem, repeat the procedure,
instead opting to do the Advanced Rebuild.

In the future, please state which version of Entourage you're using.

Where would you go next if the database was rebuilt and it
didn't resolve the problem?

Thanks

Thank you!

Sorry...I have Entourage X.

Q. Do I need to back-up anything before I "rebuild the
database?" I've never done this procedure before.

Rebuilding actually creates a new file and renames the old data file "Old
Database" within your identity folder, so that you can revert to it if the
rebuild fails. If you want to be extra safe, you can certainly back up your
data by copying this folder to another drive:
/Users/<Your User>/Documents/Microsoft User Data/

Remove Office (in 2004 that's in Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools. In
X and 2001 it's in the Value Pack on the CD - install it). Run Remove Office
- don't worry, it doesn't touch your data. Empty the Trash. Reinstall Office
from the CD. If you have v.X, run Office Updaters 10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5
from MacTopia - if 2001, the combined 9.0.4 (?) Updater from Mactopia. If
2004, you're fine.

If you uninstal/reinstall office - do you need to backup
anything? What about entourage settings/mail config?

No, but you can if you choose. All preference files are deleted. These
pages describe things that you might wish to back up:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/BackUpPrefs.htm>
What about entourage settings/mail config?

That is stored in the "Microsoft User Data" folder, which is not deleted by
the Remove Office tool. If you want to be extra safe and back it up, you
can by copying this folder to another drive:
/Users/<Your User>/Documents/Microsoft User Data/
