Having to key the equal sign to start a formula

Is there a shortcut key in excel that you could skip having to type the equal
sign (=) before the mathematical operation you want in a cell?

In other words, in stead of =2+2, being able to format cells ahead of time
or click some other generic setting or whatever method to where you would
just type 2+2 in a cell and it would automatically know you wanted to add
those numbers together in the cell rather than it coming up with the label
2+2? Then move to another cell and type 6*3 or whatever else you wanted?

Thanks,

Bruce
