Headers/footers not appearing in Print Layout view

In using Word 2002, I've encountered the following problem
twice:
I've been editing an inherited document's headers and
footers but all of the sudden, when I click on Show
Headers/Footers (and I am in Print Layout view), the
document just flashes for a second but doesn't let me at
the headers or footers.
I actually had to start editing all over with the original
version of this document and luckily, it didn't do it
again but I'd be very interested in hearing how I can
prevent this from happening again, especially when one is
on a deadline!
