I was using my Entourage as usual, when.....
A window appeared asking me to rebuild my database becouse "Entourage
cannot access your data"....

But the "Rebuild" doesn't work! The result is: "an error occurred while
launching. A read/write error has occurred (-40)."

There is a lot of free space on my computer: what's hap?
please someone help me... I have 2 gigs of email there...

A read/write error would normally indicate hard disk corruption.

Try running 'disk utility' or 'disk first aid' - you'll find one of them in
your Applications/Utilities folder (which one depends on what system you are
running)

I am trying to rebuild my database (have done it before) and I am either
getting a message 'quit all MS apps (all apps are quit and reminders are
off) or I get to the rebuild screen but it is blank or it displays text for
1-2 seconds. Then in both cases, Entourage quits. This happens both when I
am in the corrupted identity and in a newly created and functioning
identity. I have even tried trashing the prefs and also re-installed update
10.1.6.

I am using Entourage X 10.1.6 Mac OS X 10.3.5

I am getting an error when I try to open my main identity (error # 4362) and
at 1st, I got the same error when trying to access a message in the drafts
folder (corrupt message?). Now, I can click on any message and not see any
preview text.

Any fixes? Help!

I found a solution:

I trashed the Entourage App. (10.1.6) Dragged in a new Entourage App
(10.1.1) from the install disk and then ran update 10.1.6 which resulted in
a new Entourage App ver 10.1.6

Then the database rebuild went as expected.

Ugg! What a waste of an hour! Back to work!

Rebuild the Entourage database
1. If you have not done so, quit all Microsoft Office programs, including
Microsoft Entourage and Office Notifications.
2. Double-click the Database Utility program located in the Office folder,
or hold down the OPTION key while starting Entourage.
3. Click the Identity of the database you want to rebuild.
4. Click Rebuild database, and then click Continue.
5. Follow the directions on your screen.
Note When you rebuild the database, Entourage does not modify your
existing database. It makes a copy of it and rebuilds and compacts the copy.
After the rebuild process is complete, there will be two folders in the
Identities folder related to the identity you rebuilt; one with the newly
rebuilt database in it and one with a backup copy of your database before it
was rebuilt (for example "Main Identity" and "Main Identity [Backed up date
and time]"). The backup copy will have the date and time of the rebuild
after its name. If your computer does not have enough free disk space to
store both your current database and a copy of it, an out-of-memory error
occurs. For example, if the current size of your database is 10 megabytes
(MB), you will need at least 20 MB of free disk space to rebuild the
database.

Rebuild process doesn't satr at all.

I have tried to bring all the database to a new computer, but entourage
presents the same behaviour.

The version is 2001, so I haven't any Utility to fix problems: how can
I do?

thanks

How are you trying? Are you getting any error messages?

You need to hold down the option key, then double-click the entourage icon
and keep holding the key down until the rebuild screen appears.
