It sounds like the update was interrupted for some reason.

Use the 'remove office' utility in /Applications/Microsoft Office
2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office/

Then re-install office from the CD

Then re-apply the updates.

WIll I lose info that is stored in my mail accounts...ie: the messages
in my inboxes, etc? They are important, I would like to be able to
recover those if I need to re-install.

No you won't. That is all stored in the "Microsoft User Data" folder (MUD
Folder) that sits in your documents folder. This is not affected, and will
be picked up by the new installation first time you run it.

I had the same trouble - applying Office update 11.2.4, and lost all
Entourage mail, address book, etc.

I followed advice below to uninstall and re-install, but no luck. It
didn't seem to "pick up" the previous data.

I also tried using "IMPORT" funtion, but it never let me choose
anything to import from "Main User" identity. Do you know how I can
confirm the pressence of the MUD folder you referred to?

Thanks for your help!

(By the way - I appreciate your Christian witness. We are missionaries
in Japan right now. I'm afraid I've lost my prayer letter update
e-mail addresses!)

Try selecting 'Switch Identity' from the Entourage menu and see if your old
identity is listed there - it is possible that the update has reset the
identity that is being used.

I tried to switch identities, but only one was listed - "Main User". I
clicked on it, but no change.

I'm still operating on the assumption that my Entourage is like a body
looking for it's head. It just misplaced it and can't find it for some
reason. I'm not letting myself think that a simple Office Update could
have wiped out my whole Entourage database. Is there a chance that it
somehow got written over?

Any other ideas are welcome!

Thanks,

You cannot import from the same version of Entourage. eg: Entourage X to
Entourage X or Entourage 2004 to Entourage 2004.

Entourage stores data in the Microsoft User Data folder. This folder is
located in your Documents folder. See
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/path/ent_db.html>

Problems happen when users move the MUD folder itself or folders inside to
another location. When this happens Entourage will create a new blank
Identity in the MUD or if needed, create an entirely new MUD folder. When
this occurs all mail seems to have disappeared.

Select Switch Identity and see if your old identity is still listed. Your
identity is named "Main" by default.

To find your old database, search for "Microsoft User Data" (without the
quotes). More info here
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/identities.html#id2>

Let us know if this helps.

I suggest to all Entourage users that prior to updates (MS Office or OS X)
that they back up the entire Microsoft User Data folder (after quiting all
MS Office apps, including the DB Daemon) to another location. If something
happens to your mail, etc., you have a full backup. Just move it back and
try again. The files are not that big; I've been using Entourage since OS 9
days (and imported data from my old Outlook on Windows NT4, so much of the
mail is even older than that!), and the user data is less than one GB.

YES! That was it. Searching for MUD I realized I had two listed - the
original one with all my data and then a new empty one created when I
re-installed Entourage (this is what was confusing me). I had
apparently moved the original MUD folder in an effort to "clean up" my
file oganization. I moved the correct MUD folder back to the correct
place and all is well.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This has helped me immensely.

I too have fallen foul of the disappearing data. Having read through
many of the messages on the idetity topic I created a new identity,
found it was just where you said it was, and conducted searches for
other MUD folders, and Main Identity folders but none was found except
empty folders in the caches/metadata folder. You mention in one reply
that the path might be lost, and that there is utility that might fix
it? Can you tell me more?
