Help with Formula Again

B

Brian

I posted my previous question at 12:20pm. I got some
help but I don't think I'm being clear enough unless I'm
just not following the answers I received. I don't think
conditional formatting is an option in my case. This is
what I'm trying to do-

I have 2 different workbooks.
Workbook 1 is a construction status
When a 1 of the 5 stages of const. is completed an X is
placed in the cell.
Workbook 2 has amounts of the construction loan for each
stage.

I am looking for a formula that when the X is placed in
the cell in workbook 1 for each stage of construction
the corresponding cell with the amount of $ for the loan
in workbook 2 turns yellow. So when the project is
complete all 5 cells on workbook 2 should be yellow.

So to sum it all up I want a formula that will change the
color of a certain cell in workbook 2 when an X is typed
in a cell in workbook 1.

Thanks Again for your help.

Brian,

I don't know exactly what answers you received earlier, but they were
probably right on. You are trying to change a format based on a condition.
That's conditional formatting. There is one problem though. You can't use
conditional formatting in book 2 based on a condition in book 1. So, you'll
have to pull your "X" into book 2 and then use the conditional formating.

Here's how you could do it. Suppose the "X" you're interested in is in book
1 at A1. Go to book 2 and put =[Book1]Sheet1!$A$1 in cell A1. Then in cell
B1 select Format/Conditional Formatting and select "Format Is" in the left
box and put =A1="X" in the box at the right. Then click the format button
and pick a color. OK twice will finish it. Now, if A1 in book 1 is "X" cell
B1 in book 2 will change color. If A1 in book 1 is anything else, B1 in book
2 will be the default color.
