Help with Identities!

K

kevs

I noticed that past backed up identities were taking up over a GB on
hardrive so I deleted them all except most recent.

Now all my signatures are gone.

There are fifteen deleted:
Kev Identity (backed up 6/29/2004)
Kev Identity (backed up 7/29/2004)
Kev Identity (backed up 3/29/2005)
Kev Identity (backed up 5/29/2005
Kev Identity

The last one has no "backed up" after it.

Now in MS users data I see two folders,
One says Identities and other Office 2004 Identities. Is that a mistake or
are they trying intent ally to increase their paid help support bills?

Inside the Office Identities is a Kev Identity.
Inside Identities is a 'Main Identity"

Appreciate help. Totally lost.

Plain "Identities" was for Outlook Express 5.0.x, if you ever used it.
"Office 2004 Identities" is for Entourage 2004 Identities, "Office X
Identities" is for Entourage X Identities, if you ever had it.

in all cases, the default identity is called "Main Identity". If you ever
renamed it in Entourage/Switch Identities, it will be called whatever you
named it. It appears you did rename it to "Kev". It's possible to have
several identities, of course. But the "(backed up [date)" identities are
Entourage 2004's saved old versions when you do a Rebuild. (A bit
unnecessary of you to have done over 15 rebuilds!) Once you're sure you're
OK in the newly rebuilt identity, you can go back and delete all those
backups, as you just did. Get rid of all but the most recent of the rest of
them, too. (In OE, Entourage 2001 and X, only the "Database" file itself and
some extra files got rebuilt, and the old ones prefaces by "Old". Now in
2004, the Rebuild engine re-makes the entire folder and appends "backed
up...)" to the old copies.

Your Signatures file ought to have been copied into your current "Kev
Identity". If it's not there, I venture to suggest that you removed it
yourself, inadvertently. There should also be a Mailing Lists and a Rules
file. It's very rare for any of these three to get corrupted (they're simple
files) so if they're really gone, try copying the Signatures file (and any
other missing) from your most recent backup folder there into the current
Kev Identity folder and quit and relaunch Entourage. You'll probably find
all your signatures back, at least as they were when you did your last
rebuild.

Thanks Paul: I deleted that other Identity folder and everything is cool.
Don't know why it was there. Carried over from who knows what.

BTW, while in Entourage, how do you see which is current identity?
Thanks.

BTW, while in Entourage, how do you see which is current identity?

It's whatever the main window's title bar is named after the € dot. If you
have only one identity, and you never changed the name from "Main Identity"
then you won't see any € dot or identity name. Bi if you either created any
other identity or renamed your only one, you'll see the name in the title
bar of the main window. In your case, you should see "Mail € Kev Identity"
as the title bar of the main window, no? (Actually, I'm not 100% positive
what happens if you have only one non-back-up identity, which you've
renamed. Perhaps you only get the € and name if you have ore than one. But I
doubt it.)

Thanks Paul:

I've renamed it, and it is currently, and has always been "Kevs Identity'
Yet it's always just said "Mail" at top window.

If you only have one identity, no matter what it's called, I guess the main
window just says "Mail", "Calendar", etc. then. If you have more than one
identity, each one will be specified plus "€" before the "Mail" etc., window
title.
