Help with pagination

I've been pulling my hair out here for some time now and any assistance
would be greatly appreciated. I'm working on a textbook with moderately
funky page numbering, and trying to figure out a way to somehow
automate this using publisher. (keep in mind, I need the pagination to
appear on the actual pages). Also, possibly complicaing the matter, the
entire publisher file requires that the entire file is in two page
spreads (its a long boring story, but an absolute requirement)

The page numbers run as such: A-1, 1, 2, A-2, A-3, 3, 4, A-4, A-5,
5...and so on. I've tried using the insert page number feature, but it
only lets me number pages sequentially. (1,2,3,4). I then thought I
could create sections for each group and number, however, this only
helps me out on the A-# pages.

Is this something that can be achieved using publisher? Is there an
available add-in anywhere that would facilitate this task, or am I
giving my social life and learning vba to make this happen?

Thanks
