Help with template creation techniques

There are two things I am trying to do that probably requires some outside
graphic editor. I have PaintShop Pro Studio 9, but am wondering if there
is easier software to accomplish the following:

1. Creation of an image object with a transparent background.
2. Editing/cropping photos to be used as part of a slide background by
feathering the edges of the image and making it transparent.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I think you have chosen a good image editor for this job. There are tons of
PaintShop Pro tutorials on the web, so if you do a search in google you'll
probably find several that tell you exactly how to do what you want.
