Hide Six Buttons in Upper Left Corner?

Other than toggling the Hide Folders arrow, is it possible to hide or reduce
the size of the six buttons in the upper lefthand corner of the Mail panel?

I really prefer the Hidden state for the folders, but I'd still like to be
able to navigate the folders and subfolders without expanding to the
wasteful "Unhidden" view.

In the "General" Preferences, you'll find a checkbox allowing the display of
"smaller navigation buttons" in that corner. I have checked it for exactly
the same reason :)

Hooray! So much better -- thank you! :) :) :)

Of course, now I have another problem as an unintended consequence of the
solution. With the folder list on the left, and the right half split between
the headers and the preview pane, the lower left hand corner is wasted
space.

Is there any way to make the preview pane span the entire window instead of
half of it?

No, the only way is to click "Hide Folders", or go to View -> Folder List.
