Hiding junk folder in 2004?

J

John M. Burke

I've disabled the junk mail protection in Entourage 2004 since I use
SpamSieve. Unlike v.X, however, the 'Junk E-mail' box is still visible, even
when junk protection is disabled. Is this normal? And is there anyway to
hide this box? SpamSieve uses its own 'Spam' box.

Also can you customize the toolbar to hide the 'Junk' button? I've looked
for a 'Customize Toolbar' menu item, or some such, but have not found it.
Thanks,

John

Please find a way not to use your real email address on a newsgroup, John.
That is a platinum invitation to spammers.

I use SpamSeive too, and I am really impressed that for the first time since
the floodgates opened on spam I feel as if I have a handle on it.

What do you do at Vandy? I graduated from there a while back with an English
major.

Crap! I just upgraded to Office 2004 this morning, and it seems to have lost
track of my fake account for posting in newsgroups! The account is still
there, but it didn't use it. I've now fixed it (I think - we'll see when the
post shows up, I guess....) Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully not too much
damage has been done. According to SpamSieve, more than a third of my
incoming e-mail in the last week was spam, so it's not like my address is a
secret anymore. It's posted on the departmental web page, etc., so there's
little I can do besides filter, filter, filter.

With regard to my initial inquiry, is there anyway to get rid of the Junk
box and button? With that button sitting right next to 'Send & Receive' I've
already inadvertently hit it a couple of times today. It seems so pointless
for it to be there if I'm not using the Junk feature.

I'm not one to know such things since I'm very new to Entourage.

Besides, I don't have a Junk Mail button. I do have the mailbox with the red
circle, and I would like to get rid of it too, but no button.

Do you mean the server icons or something on the toolbar? (Not that my
understanding it will help you much.)

Hehe...That one got me too. I posted for almost a week without realizing it
;-)

You can imagine all the spam I got from that! Especially one that claimed to
be from MS, looking all official, telling me to run the attached executable
for my security. I received that one a couple times a day.

The spam has since slowed to maybe one a day now, with the help of
SpamAssassin. I have to say that I'm impressed by Entourage's junk mail

Are you using Office 2004? It's on the toolbar, right between 'Delete' and
'Send & Receive.' The fact that it's sitting right next to the 'Send &
Receive' button means that it's easy to inadvertently hit it. I don't mind
the Junk E-Mail box so much, as I would imagine that I could modify the
SpamSieve script to use it instead of the 'Spam' folder. But that button has
got to go! I don't understand why they would force you to keep useless
buttons on toolbar when you've deactivated the feature. The least they could
do is grey it out when Junk E-mail protection is turned off.

Yes, I am using 2004. And I don't have a delete button at all. Try that on.
Also, I don't have a spam button. Next to S&R is Mark All Read.

I don't use buttons anyway, so I don't care. Just don't understand the
difference.

Traveling for the rest of the week with a PC and no Entourage. Will pick up
anything worth picking up when I get back on Sunday. I've enjoyed the
conversations.

Hmmmm... Is this also the case when you are viewing actual e-mail, rather
than newsgroups? I don't have either of these buttons in the newsreader, but
I do when I'm in my e-mail boxes. My question still stands... Does anyone
know if there is anyway of hiding, or at least deactivating the 'Junk'
button??? (The junk e-mail box, too, although that one is less important)

Just started getting 'security updates' from 'Microsoft' myself. ;)

All this as punishment for one errant post!

There is no way to remove the junk mail folder or the junk mail buttons from
Entourage's UI short of mucking with the resources directly (which is not
really advised). You can turn off the toolbar but of course that removes
other buttons as well :)

Thanks for your response. Does anyone know if there would be any problems
with using the Junk E-mail box as my SpamSieve box (I have the junk filter
turned off)? The script would be easy enough to modify... I just don't want
to mess anything up with respect to the way that Entourage expects things to
be done.

It shouldn't be a problem. Why don't you ping the SpamSieve author to find
out for sure? I hear he's quite responsive.
