Highlighted text won’t delete when I press backspace

when i highlight a piece of text and press backspace, it isn't deleated
i must have pressed something to make this happen, but i don't know what.
does anyone know haw to change it back to normal?

Tools | Options | General: "Typing replaces selection." (Backspacing is
considered "typing.")
