Hosted Exchange Servers

Dan

Has anyone ever tried using a hosted exchange server? If so, would
your reccomend it?

I am looking for a way that our all mac office can share contacts and
calendars and found a site: http://www.enomia.com/ that for
$9.95/month will provide a hosted exchanged server. They already have
information on Entourage 2004.

If you have other ideas or reccommendations, please let me know.
I have an small (5 stations) all mac office. Shared Contacts is
crucial. Shared calendars is desirable. I have used Now
Up-To-Date/Contact and like how it works, but wish it had integrated
email, and I need MS Word. I have sent several emails to the MacBU
over the past 4 years requesting a way to share calendars and contacts
without an MS exchange server, but it doesn't look like it will
happen.

I am at a point where I need to make a decision: Do I upgrade 5
stations to Office 2004 for $1,250 or, do I purchase Now
Up-To-Date/Contact for $550 and share, share, share! What are other
businesses doing? I cant be the only one with frustration and
questions!

It has happened. The project center functionality allows you to use any
standard file server to share contacts, events, tasks, notes, and files
among Entourage users. Download the Test Drive and give it a whirl. It might
suit your needs, and best of all there's no monthly subscription!

Thanks Dave, but there is a monthly subsription. It's
$9.95/month/station. Thats $50/month for me. I've been on the MS
site reading about exchange servers. Does anyone know what all I
would need if I purchased a windows machine and Exchange Server 2003?
If I understand correctly, this is what the MS site says:
PC machine: $?
Windows Server 2003: $999.
Windows Server Client Access: $199
Exchange Server: $699
Exchange Server User CALs: $350
This could end up costing me about $3,000 just to have an exchange
server in my office to share contacts and calendars. This would take
about 5 years to recoup my costs if I purchased instead of rented a
hosted exchange server.
Can't the Microsoft BU see how ridiculous this is to some businesses?

Dan, please read closely. You can share contacts and calendar events using
Entourage 2004 *without* an Exchange server. All you need is for all copies
of Entourage to have access to a standard file server (AFP, SMB, HTTP-DAV).
This could be as simple as enabling File Sharing on any one of the Macs you
currently have in your office. Again, YOU DO NOT NEED AN EXCHANGE SERVER.

But Dave answered your question directly. You said

And Dave is telling you that you can share calendars and contacts in
Entourage 2004 WITHOUT an Exchange server. (You can share tasks, notes,
clippings and files too.) No Exchange server necessary, Isn't that what you
asked for? You're losing me here.

If your lost, its OK, because I am lost also. I've downloaded two
copies of the test drive and installed it on two computers. I think I
understand how the project center works, but I am still not
understanding how to share my entire calendar and contact information.
What if I want to share all of my contacts except Family and
Friends? What if I want to share my calendar so people can see it
when scheduling a meeting? Do I have to set up some kind of project
first, even if its not really a project? I hate to be an idiot about
this, but I have read everything on the office help, and checked out
many of the newsgroup posts and I still don't understand.

Make sure all of your non-family/friend contacts are part of the shared
project and are also shared out.
What if I want to share my calendar so people can see it
when scheduling a meeting

Make sure every event is part of the shared project and also shared out.
Do I have to set up some kind of project
first, even if its not really a project?

Yes.

I had good luck with MI8. They are a bit more expensive, but they offer the
Good Technology version of the Blackberry, if it's important to you. Good
does what Blackberry doesn't - wireless sycn of your address book and
calendar. Blackberry requires a cable that makes it PC/Windows only. Good
is all wireless.

Good luck,
Will
