Hotmail access has stopped working

L

Lee

Background first:
Mac user since 1986
Currently using OS 9.1, Entourage 2001, IE 5.1.6 (5010)

After years of successful operation, my Hotmail access thru Entourage has
suddenly stopped working. Error Log says "Could not retrieve mail from
account Lee@Hotmail."
I checked online and my Hotmail account is still open and active (I access
it frequently within the 30-day rule). As a last resort, I finally deleted
that Hotmail acct within Entourage and set up a new one. Now it won't
"receive" the folder list. At last try the progress bar rolled along for
about a half-hour. I finally manually stopped it. THEN (aaarrrrgggghhhh)
when I went to my regular Entourage Inbox, the status bar at the bottom said
I was in the Hotmail acct.

Anybody out there got ideas? I'm about to throw the whole computer out the
window, except that I'm so addicted, I know that I will die within an hour
if I do that!

Microsoft turned off access to free Hotmail accounts from Entourage and
Outlook last week. Paid Hotmail subscriptions can still use Entourage with
Hotmail.

Did they turn it off for everybody? I have a free Hotmail account, and in a
test just now (10/3) I successfully sent an email *from* my Hotmail account
and *received* it in my account, using Entourage.....

Nope. I have a paid Hotmail account and I cannot access Hotmail from
Entourage. I can access it from Outlook on my PC laptop, but not from
Entourage on my Mac. I delete and rebuild the account periodically to see if
the Hotmail/Entourage problem has been fixed, but so far, no go. (I posted
the details of the problem in another post months ago, and it¹s always the
same thing.)

There¹s a shareware program on VersionTracker called Mail Forward (
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/8299 ) that will allegedly
work around the problem, but I haven¹t used it myself. I just retrieve my
Hotmail from my laptop now.

Paid Hotmail subscriptions can still use Entourage with
Hotmail? NOT TRUE. I am a paid subscriber and I'm not able to
connect using Entourage - no sending or receiving! In terms of a new
account, I too set one up to diagnose whether it was my computer and
the new free account was able to send and receive for a day or so and
then it became inoperative suggesting that the policy is somewhat
suspect in terms of implementation. If Hotmail really wanted to
migrate free users to the pay service you'd think that they would not
allow a new account to operate with the dreaded Outlook type products
or that they would alert long time free users that the end was near -
upgrade today. Since they've done none of the above I am left to
conclude that this was not well thought out on the part of Hotmail
staff and that they are currently in denial that anything is wrong
based on the posts by me and others with regard to Hotmail support
staff replies. I hope someone out there has a idea how we can remedy
this soon.

My paid subscription works fine. It was out for about two days last week
but has been problem-free since.
