How 2 resolve circular reference

I am unable to add a successor to a task because it says it would create a
circular reference. I am having trouble tracing through all the
relationships by hand. (This is a big, complicated file.) Is there a tool
that analyzes task relationships and that could show the path to the
potential circular reference?

Bill,
Large files with many linkages are difficult to track when it comes to
logic errors. The most likely source of circular relationships is having
links on Summary lines. If this is the case with your file, re-configure
the logic so that no links are attached to summaries.

If summary line links are not the problem, I know of no analysis tools
for directly tracking down circular relationships. The few times I've
been faced with circular relationships, I use the manual method - paper
and pencil. Its tedious but it does work. If you have some idea of where
the problems starts (i.e. you said it complained when you tried to add a
task successor), you might want to try a trace macro. It won't
necessarily find the problem but it might make the "hunt" a little
easier. Go to Jack Dahlgren's website at:
http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm
and look for his macro called "trace".

Hope this helps.
