How can I add PowerPoint 2002 to Office XP SBE

I have Office XP Small Business Edition (with OEM CD). I also have Lotus
Freelance Graphics on the same PC. How can I add PowerPoint on the PC? Will
PowerPoint 2002 upgrade work?

No, it won't. You cannot use an upgrade to upgrade products of the same
line. If you do not have a qualifying product (Office 97 or 2000, or
PowerPoint 97 or 2000) then you will need to purchase the full version.

These links had given me hope:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302776
(PPT97: How to Add PowerPoint 97 to Office 2000 Small Business Edition)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;159831
(PPT97: Which Products Qualify for PowerPoint 97 Upgrade?) - this one
mentions Lotus Freelance for Windows, versions 2.0 or later, as qualifying,
and I have ver.9.0

Is the cross-upgrade restriction only in Office XP/2002? If not PowerPoint
2002 Upgrade, can I add PowerPoint 97 Upgrade, keeping on my PC the existing
Office XP SBE and Lotus Freelance? - Many thanks

Those links are completely and utterly irrelevant. The first is regarding
adding PowerPoint *97* to Office *2000* (note two *different* versions).

The second discusses the qualifying products for PP97 - again, completely
irrelevant.

No, you may not use a PowerPoint 97 upgrade - you have no qualifying
product. Freelance Graphics v9 was released *AFTER* PowerPoint 97, therefore
cannot be a qualifying product as it did not exist at the time of PP97's
release. Or later is restricted to those product versions available at the
time of release of the software in question.

*No* Office line support upgrading ('crossgrading') within the same line -
again, as I stated earlier, you will be required to purchase a *full
licence*. You do not have a valid qualifying product to support an upgrade.

I would suggest that you go for the PPT 2003 upgrade, as Office XP SBE is
indeed an upgrade qualifier for it.

See Where's PowerPoint? http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00280.htm -- but
bear in mind that we haven't updated that to explain that almost everything
seems to be an upgrade qualifier for PPT 2003. (Way to go, MS! Finally!) See
http://www.microsoft.com/office/powerpoint/howtobuy/default.mspx#XSLTsection

2003.

He does, however, have a valid qualifying product to support a PPT 2003
upgrade version.

126121120120 Office XP SBE is an upgrade qualifier for PPT 2003 even though
Office XP SBE doesn't include PPT. This is different than all previous PPT
upgrade qualification paths, and I applaud MS for finally making it easy for
users to add PPT to their existing Office suites.

There are two issues here: -

1) He did not mention his operating system - he could be running 98 or
ME, in which case money spent on PP2003 would be wasted as neither OS
supports it. Office 2003 applications require Windows 2000 (SP3 or later),
Windows XP or Windows 2003). I thought it best to play safe - he may not
think to look at the box, would open it, and the installer would fail - he
would then be left with a application he couldn't use (unless he was willing
to upgrade his OS to XP) and that he couldn't return as I know of no
software retailer that would take back opened software - especially if the
purchaser didn't do their homework and check to see if it was compatible
with their OS.

2) Office XP SBE is (was) OEM only. Assuming a 2003-compatible OS, he's
going to have a problem should anything happen to his current system - the
EULA for an upgrade licence states that, once a product is used to qualify
(in this case XP SBE) the two licences then become one (two halves of a
whole if you like). If something happens to the qualifying product (i.e. the
machine dies) then the upgrade licence is null and void. Once used to
qualify, that's it - the two products are 'locked' together. If he wanted to
sell his current system, to comply with the EULA he would be obliged to give
the PP2003 upgrade with it.

Therefore, I stick to my original recommendation that he purchases a full
licence. PP2002 can still be purchased (Amazon still sells it, for example).
