I would suggest that you go for the PPT 2003 upgrade, as Office XP
SBE is indeed an upgrade qualifier for it.
See Where's PowerPoint?

-- but bear in mind that we haven't updated that to explain that
almost everything seems to be an upgrade qualifier for PPT 2003. (Way
to go, MS! Finally!) See

126121120120 to confirm that Office XP SBE is an upgrade qualifier
for PPT 2003.
There are two issues here: -
1) He did not mention his operating system - he could be running 98 or
ME, in which case money spent on PP2003 would be wasted as neither OS
supports it. Office 2003 applications require Windows 2000 (SP3 or later),
Windows XP or Windows 2003). I thought it best to play safe - he may not
think to look at the box, would open it, and the installer would fail - he
would then be left with a application he couldn't use (unless he was willing
to upgrade his OS to XP) and that he couldn't return as I know of no
software retailer that would take back opened software - especially if the
purchaser didn't do their homework and check to see if it was compatible
with their OS.
2) Office XP SBE is (was) OEM only. Assuming a 2003-compatible OS, he's
going to have a problem should anything happen to his current system - the
EULA for an upgrade licence states that, once a product is used to qualify
(in this case XP SBE) the two licences then become one (two halves of a
whole if you like). If something happens to the qualifying product (i.e. the
machine dies) then the upgrade licence is null and void. Once used to
qualify, that's it - the two products are 'locked' together. If he wanted to
sell his current system, to comply with the EULA he would be obliged to give
the PP2003 upgrade with it.
Therefore, I stick to my original recommendation that he purchases a full
licence. PP2002 can still be purchased (Amazon still sells it, for example).
